Welcome to my nature photography website. Links to the galleries are below this introduction. If you live in Humboldt County, California, I might be able to show you my matted prints in person, depending on your location. Please email me at steve.gok2006@gmail.com to arrange a meeting or call (707) 840-0876.
My nature photography grows out of the peace and joy, sometimes ecstacy, that I feel when surrounded by or struck by the beauty of our planet. I hope my work expresses, even if just a little, my passion for that beauty, some sense of why it takes my breath away. If I touch even just a few lives, maybe a few more people will want to take better care of our home planet, fight and vote against the greed and ignorance that continue to rape her, and refuse to let it go unchecked.
Sometimes I'm asked if I "manipulate" my images. I do. Sometimes to make the image better match what I recall photographing. If I take any "artistic license," it is when I use Photoshop to make small changes in contrast or color balance in order to recapture more of the complete experience I had. Looking east from the top of Half Dome in Yosemite toward the crest of the Sierra is more than just a visual perception. The question is whether a two-dimensional photograph can take a viewer beyond "mere" perception. To the best of my memory, the colors in the prints are just what I experienced.
My first backpacking trip was into Tenaya Canyon in Yosemite when I was ten. I went from simple, Kodak box cameras in high school to a twin lens Rolleiflex in college and, later, a single lens Rollei 6006 and 35mm equipment. The 35mm has worked best for me when I'm out on the trail or hiking cross-country. I've been using a Nikon FM2 and I scan the film. I plan to switch to a digital camera--probably a Nikon D200.
I ship matted prints throughout the United States. If you have any questions, please email me at steve.gok2006@gmail.com.
